- Cooling pads
Cooling reduces heat stress on the animals in hot weather.
The main solution is evaporative pads combined with tunnel ventilation: air passes through wetted pads and is cooled before it enters the house.
Pads are placed at the tunnel inlet and sized for the tunnel-mode air exchange: all incoming air must pass through them.
Schematic, not to scale. Air movement follows typical Exafan schemes.
Evaporative cooling uses the heat of the air to evaporate water.
The air temperature falls and its humidity rises. That is why we always calculate cooling together with ventilation.
For pads to work, the tunnel-mode air must pass through them and water must wet their whole area evenly. Pad area is chosen so that air velocity through the pads is not excessive.

How evaporative cooling works, how pads with tunnel ventilation differ from fogging and from sprinkling the birds, and why none of them can be chosen separately from ventilation.
If the data is sufficient, a preliminary calculation is possible before a site visit.
